 Look for a new home by text message Property Focus - Manchester Living Magazine The idea for an ingenious new business was sparked off by a road accident and a diversion. Early last year, John Oakes was driving home to Wilmslow from working in Birmingham when an accident forced him to divert from his normal route and he started looking at houses for sale in Knutsford. At the time he was looking to move home and he noticed a property he liked. However, when he rang the agent he found they could not help him because he couldn't remember which road he was on and when he tried to describe the property, the agent's reply was that they have 200 properties in that area and suggested he looked on their website when he got home. And so then Property Finder Solutions Ltd was born. John decided there must be a way to use new communications technologies to get instant information about the property. He teamed up with an IT professional, Martin Perry, from Congleton, and over the past year they developed a unique system based upon SMS text messaging. John and Martin have recently been joined by Barry Linnard, who has more than 30 years' experience of system implementation and project management in both public and private sectors. Estate agents who sign up to the scheme will add a small board to their for sale signs giving a number to text for more information. Anyone who uses the service will receive an instantaneous response to their mobile phone telling them the property details, price and contact number. The estate agent will also get an email message telling them there has been an enquiry about the property and the prospective viewers' phone number. In this day and age, when most information is at our fingertips from the Internet or mobile phones, this technology enables estate agents to utilise demands for instant information and to use the for sale boards to their best advantage. John said: "SMS technology is going to be the biggest growth area and people are using it as a business and marketing tool even more. People are going to be using mobile phones for all sorts of things over the next few years. The response to our new business has been astonishing and we've had so many estate agents coming to us." According to statistics, the number of text messages sent will go up to 36.5 billion this year. Since 2001 the UK's annual text messaging figures have risen by at least 22% each year. Each text message costs £1.50 to the customer but as buying a house is the biggest purchase most people will make in their lives, this hardly adds to the cost.The service is free to estate agents and they even get a share of the SMS revenue, which is an added incentive for them to sign up.
